The School District of Palm Beach County Career Academy Programs offer expanded choices to students that
challenge them academically and provide them with skills to successfully continue their post-secondary education and meet career goals.
What are career academies? Career academies are small learning communities within a high school. Academies include a curriculum that combines a career focus with meeting college requirements. Partnerships with supporting employers, community members, and institutions of higher education are formed.
Career Academy Programs transform the traditional, comprehensive high school in ways that support student achievement. Career Academies are more centered on and responsive to the needs of the community and the students.
We have a number of exciting things that were accomplished last year and we are hoping for a banner year in 2012-2013 school year as well.
Last year two significant accomplishments by the Engineering Academy were the National Career Academy Coalition / Association for Career and Technical Education Career Academy site review yielded our Engineering Academy being designated as a "Model" Academy. In addition the Engineering Academy also was designated an official Project Lead the Way Academy. Both are great honors for the school, academies, students and teachers, your help as Advisory Board members cannot be overlooked in being to achieve these honors.
Our Web and Digital Design Academy was able to certify hundreds of students in the use of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe Flash, Word, Powerpoint and Excel. These students will benefit for years to come with the knowledge and expertise they have gained from these courses. The IT Academy also received new equipment and will be expanding its curriculum to include a Digital Design Class that will use this equipment to explore the Direct-to-Garment industry.
Our Culinary Academy was reviewed by the National Career Academy Coalition / Association for Career and Technical Education Career Academy two years ago and continues to perform at a high level providing our students with practical business and job skills that can be put to use immediately in the culinary field. In addition the culinary students continue to get real world experience in how to run a restaurant by their daily and weekly participation in running our Cafe a la Central.
As you can see we accomplished a great deal in the last year and have much more to do as we look forward.
