Public Opening
1. Time - 3:15pm

Minutes: 

Superintendent Gent opened the session and informed Board Members that the presentation and discussion will be regarding Common Core State Standards; Differentiated Accountability and the Five Year Capital Plan.

Janis Andrews stated that she is excited about these very important topics affecting all of our schools and their future. 

Keith Oswald, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Learning, Liz Pearlman, Director of K-12 Curriculum, Mike Sabatino K-5 Math Program Planner, and Barbara Riemer K-12 Literacy Manager, presented Board Members with information regarding the following: new Student Code of Conduct; implementation of Common Care standards by 2014; discrepancies of standards from state to state; comparing nationally and internationally; State will release a blended curriculum starting at Grade 3; state meetings/training being offered; PERT; Reading/Writing no longer assessed in isolation; literacy standards that address Social Studies, Science and other content areas; incorporating visual arts and media; FY15 assessments will be administered from 3rd to 11th grade; level of text to be used in classrooms; schools creating their own monitoring system; real world application; District wide vocabulary list that align with Common Core Standards; RTI process; bringing ELL and Staff together; parent communication and outreach; aligning report cards with Common Core Standards; increase number of parent conferences; Council of  the Great City Schools; redo diagnostic tests;  IT Department/ ET Team determined what can be used in each school; agreements with colleges; working close with guidance counselors; recruiting in high risk areas; emphasis on early training; and implementation of Haberman.

6. Differentiated Accountability and Extended Day Schools

Janis Andrews introduced Debbie Battles, Director of Federal Programs and Migrant Education, and Barbara Terembes,  from Differentiated Accountability.  Superintendent Gent informed us that this new phase ties to DA and wants Board Members to see it before academic year starts since there are different terms and words. Monitoring plan is implemented for support.  Instructional reviews and cross training will continue Keith Oswald informed that the State required 100 elementary schools to have extended day for reading and Ms. Battles is the project manager for this initiative.  Per DOE we are required to offer an opt out for Level 5 students.  Law states that instruction must be delivered by highly effective teacher.  Creating an intensive professional development plan for teachers and administrators.  Putting all our resources in to these schools for one year and then they go on their own.  District sent out notifications to staff and parents.  Developing parent training.  All will be offered and delivered by October, 2012.  All principals invited to same training as teachers. Superintendent Gent informed that we have very few vacancies in the schools right now (in comparison with past years). Support is important to school center and principals.

Superintendent Gent informed us that the Five Year Capital Plan will be brought back at the next opportunity available.

Minutes: 

Karen Brill would like to send issues to Vern Crawford regarding ideas of what is most important to each Board Member in preparation for the future Workshop on the subject. Frank Barbieri asked each Board Member to send their comments to Vern Crawford and asked Ms. Llanes to notify Ms. Brown.
