5. Technology Budget Update
Attachment: Technology Budget Update.pdf
Chairman Barbieri introduced Mike Burke to discuss this item. District is looking ahead at online testing demand and IT Department is looking at best deals in computer and is working with Dell under a time certain agreement. Capital Budget can only be used for capital outlay expenditure (cannot be used for operation day to day monies nor salary increases). Leanne Evans reviewed the Capital Budget Update. Brought two versions before (balance/unbalance). No additional money available. Priority for IT to look for money for computers (around 25,000 needed just to meet testing requirement). Five Year Plan was not getting us everything needed by 2014. Proposal came in where they will donate some and then others will be purchased. Only concern is the timing, Dell has funding available only until today. Number of desktops vs. laptops will determine the amount of computer received. Expecting to purchase/receive between 25,000 to 30,000 computers. Ms. Brill visiting schools, discovered there is a great need for more computers. Appreciate IT looking into this effort. Ms. Brown all my questions have been answered positively and my only concern is the implementation process. Deepak Agarwal is very confident that with the IT Team and what Dell is offering, all computers should be installed and ready to go. Ms. Andrews thanked Deepak Agarwal and his team for this efforts which benefit schools. Chairman Barbieri thanked everyone for their hard work.

Chairman Barbieri introduced Joe Sanches who shared how we are saving money for the District by being involved in the Energy Conservation, Recycling & Sustainability Initiatives. Introduced Lee Kapp (Utility Manager) and Cristina Crespo (Recycling & Sustainability Coordinator). Lee said main areas of responsibility control utility costs. Through Energy Management System, requests are addressed immediately. After hours, all District computers are shut down. We close down school's electricity on Fridays. Elementary/Middle Schools get 20% of school shut down after 6pm. Cristina explained the recycling process and participating rate has increased in every category every year. Market price has been fairly low but that number may go up. Joe Sanches spoke about stipends available. Would like to increase the recycling rates, would like to convince schools. Energy Conservation Incentive Program which Mr. Barbieri asked us to participate in, gives 50% back to schools. We can do more Energy Efficiency. Would like continued support from Board and develop a District Wide sustainaibility. Want to recognize outstanding work from schools, teams, and individuals. Chairman Barbieri asked if some schools are reluctant to get involved because of cost of recycling bins, can District provide them with bins? Mike Burke will look into it. For the past 5 years going through harsh economic times yet utility bill has come down and have kept it down. Ms. Brill enlightned by presentation. Find way to have support from School Administrators. Resort Conversation Specialists' visit by surprise. Error bills explanation? Lee explained that they make mistakes and it was caught. Ms. Brown said that conservation, recycling, and going green in general is the smart thing to do. As a District we need to support it to get incentives out there for even better compliance. Ms. Andrews said schools are gettting involved, employees working with students to build these clubs. Everyone is part of this team. Thanked Mr. Gent for selecting Dr. Margarita Pinkos to leadership position, Palm Beach County is on the cutting edge, 8th Annual Cultural Conference was a success and Business Partners gave money for our teachers, and congratulated also Dr. Keith Oswald and his Team.
