Agenda Item #143 Title Valedictorian and Salutatorian System - Benaim Description 1. Changing the Valedictorian and Salutatorian system to a Suma, Magna and Cum Laude system similar to colleges or just acknowledging the top 5% of the class. 2. Determining the 1 or 2 student speakers at each high school graduation by a public speaking competition aimed at an address appropriate for graduation. The persons permitted to enter would be those that qualify for Suma Cum Laude. These same students would also form a committee at each school with an equal number for faculty determined by board policy or the principal so as to insure equality where the 1st place and 2nd place public speaker winners would be determined and be the students that speak at each of their respective high school graduations along with the class and/or student government president. The 1st place winner in each high school would take part in a county wide competition for a Public Speaking Path Finder Award where a combination of judges similar to the other Path Finder awards would judge the entries. 3. The only rank released by the school district would be the county rank giving each student rank number relative to the number of students in the county. This would not be published but given to each student. There would be no ranking at individual high schools. This is meant as starting point for a discussion of an alternative to the V&S system.
