In 1971, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Coordinating Committee, Inc. (MLKCC), was organized initially as the Black Educators Caucus, sponsoring remedial tutorial programs in cooperation with the Minority Mental Health Association.  In 1975, the program became an after school project and in 1979 expanded in partnership with the School District of Palm Beach County to (1) sponsor oratory, poster and drama contest commemorating Dr. King's January birth date; (2) to provide Afro-Arts Annual presentation and (3) to participate in Palm Beach Community College's Annual Multicultural Festival.  In addition to several other activities the competitive events include art exhibits, performing arts, oratorical, poster and essay contests.  The executive director is retired Palm Beach County teacher, Edith C. Bush.

Recommendation
I recommend the School Board of Palm Beach County proclaims the month of February 2012 as National African American History Month and encourage district employees to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, activities and programs that raise awareness and appreciation of African American history.
