FM4 - Payroll Deduction for UNCF (United Negro College Fund, Inc.)
Board policy 6.05 Employee Payroll Deductions requires that all payroll deductions, not required by law, shall have specific Board approval. The District plans to partner with the UNCF to raise funds to provide scholarships to Palm Beach County School District graduating seniors. A percentage of the money raised would also go to support the UNCF’s 38 member schools, which are small, private historically black colleges and universities. Students graduating from Palm Beach County schools may use a scholarship from UNCF to attend any school of the student’s choice. The campaign will take place in February each year during Black History Month.
All UNCF scholarships are based upon financial need and students of all ethnicities are eligible. Since 1944, UNCF has helped students live the American dream by helping more than 400,000 young men and women graduate from colleges and universities.
Today, UNCF supports approximately 60,000 students who attend more than 900 schools nationwide. UNCF is the largest and most effective minority education support organization in the nation.
Both The Non-Profit Times and The Chronicle of Philanthropy rank UNCF among the top 10 charitable educational organizations in the country. Additionally, BBB Wise Giving Alliance and Charity Navigator, non-profit watchdogs, have given UNCF high ratings for standards of charity accountability.
I recommend that the School Board approve adding the UNCF as an authorized payroll deduction.
