PA6-Autism Awareness Month
Autism Awareness Month offers the opportunity to educate everyone about autism and issues within the autism community.
Facts about Autism:
" Autism now affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys
" Autism prevalence figures are growing
" Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S.
" Autism costs a family $60,000 a year on average
" Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases
" Boys are nearly five times more likely than girls to have autism
" There is no medical detection or cure for autism
" There are currently 2163 students with autism spectrum disorders served in a variety of service delivery options in the School District of Palm Beach County, this is an increase of 244 % since 2007 and these numbers continue to trend toward significant growth
" There are 2 Charter Schools serving exclusively students with autism spectrum disorders
" The School District of Palm Beach County collaborates closely with organizations within our community such as Florida Atlantic University's Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, Autism Project of Palm Beach County, Autism Speaks
" More than 7000 people participated in the 2013 Walk Now for Autism Speaks Palm Beach on March 3rd at the Meyer Amphitheatre.
