Agenda Item #66

AC 3 - AVID / AVID Excel Implementation Agreements

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a systemic instructional system for students in kindergarten through higher education (K-16).  The AVID College Readiness System is a school-wide transformational effort focused on leadership, systems, instruction, and culture.  AVID is designed to increase the number of students who enroll and succeed in higher education and beyond high school.  The AVID College Readiness System is a catalyst for developing a school culture that closes the expectation and opportunity gaps many students face, and prepares all students for success in a global society.
These Agreements will allow the AVID College Readiness System to be implemented in nine high schools, one K-12 school and seven middle schools and AVID Excel, an extension of AVID, to be implemented in three middle schools for 2013-14.
AVID Excel is a pre-AVID middle school program intended to break the detrimental cycle that turns many English Language Learners (ELLs) into long-term ELLs. AVID Excel accelerates students’ academic language acquisition and puts them on a pathway to high school AVID and college readiness.

These Agreements will also allow the School District of Palm Beach County to implement AVID's curriculum and use the AVID logo in all twenty AVID sites.

I recommend that the School Board approve the AVID and AVID Excel Implementation Agreements effective May 2013 - June 2014 and authorize the Superintendent or designee to sign all related documents.
