Sharon Hartsell, Florida School Boards Association Facilitator, introduced herself and provided Board Members with an overview of what will be presented in today's session.

Ms. Hartsell reviewed a PowerPoint presentation and summarized the following topics: Desired Outcomes; Assumptions; Ground Rules; Florida Sunshine Law; FSBA Governance Model; Vision; Roles in Creating a Vision; Importance of Role Identification; Roles in Creating Structure; To Ensure Accountability;  The Roles of Advocates;  What is the School Board?; What is a Superintendent?;  Who Do You Serve?; Importance of a High Performing School Board; Danger Signs In A School District; Qualities of Great School Board Members; Govern; Powers and Duties of the School Board and the Superintendent; Effective Communication and Real Life Applications; and Real Life Applications.

Board Members discussed the following topics: Vision statement; Seen as a team by the public; Establish trust; Team conflict; Board roles; Promoting confidence in the community;  Creating Policy; Structure; Personnel; Technology; Instructional; Committees; Transportation; Food Services; Bargaining units; Model a positive climate for student success; Realign resources; Rethinking how things are done and taking risks; No test for Ethic skills or Soft skills; Using resources to meet the needs of students that need it most; More targeted use of resources; Board needs to have more opportunity to talk as a group; More time for Q&A discussion at Board Meetings; Expand pool of information; Suggest next work shop include data; EDW reports; Methodology of reports; Calculation for graduation rate; Different types of diplomas and how they are used; New state accountability rules;. Working harder at collaboration; Delicate balance of collaborating with all of the community and Advocacy; Crossing line of what is administrative vs. what is policy; Being clear when asking for data; Part of policy to visit schools; Mis-communication; Board Members do not give direction to staff; and Procedures to follow with constituents concerns.

Board Members and Mr. Gent participated in an activity regarding the "Powers and Duties of the Board and Superintendent."

Board Members and Mr. Gent reviewed Case Studies #1, #3, and #4.
