The User’s EasyGuide to
Accessing AOL Through FIRN
Adapted from the
novelette, Nerdism Made Easy by Donald McBride
America Online offers a discount program to users who have
the ability to access AOL without
using their telephone dial-up lines. As
FIRN PPP users, many teachers can take advantage of this AOL program, currently
priced at $9.95 a month, a considerable savings over the $22.95 or so currently
charged regular AOL dialup accounts.
To access AOL
through FIRNPPP:
1.)
First,
you must have a current FIRN PPP dialup account.
2.)
Dialup
FIRN PPP and log on as usual, logging on with your 9xxxxxxx number, password
and selecting FIRN PPP Option 19 as if you were only going to use FIRN PPP.
3.)
Instead
of running Netscape™ or Internet Explorer™ however, run the AOL
software instead.
4.)
Before
clicking the “Sign on” button,
change the “Select location” from
your current number (usually it says “Home”)
to “TCP Connection”.
Other popular services, such as CompuServe and
Prodigy, have similar Interent gateway accessibility as well. Check with your particular ISP (Internet Service
Provider) for details.
