*Poinciana is the only elementary school east of the
Mississippi to have its very own full-sized Planetarium
on site. Students learn about space, the stars, and
planets at an early age.
*Grades K-3 are self contained classrooms with a class
family atmosphere
*Students in grades 2 - 5 participate in Lego Robotics
as part of the curriculum.
*4th & 5th grade students participate in a program
that teaches them about the Holocaust.
*Every Kindergarten student goes on approximately one
field trip per month.
*Kindergarten students learn Sign Language as a second
language. This develops the right side of the brain.
It also develops better small muscle coordination.

part of the curriculum. We will also be including many
first grade classes this year.
*Kindergarten students learn math, spatial relations,
recycling, life science, and basic woodworking while
building a bird house.
*Students in 2nd through 4th grades learn geography
through stamp collecting as part of an enrichment lunch
program.
*Poinciana has over 200 volunteers. More than 100 of
the volunteers are retired, half of whom are retired
teachers. Parents are also welcome to volunteer in their
children's classrooms. We have the best student/adult
ratio in the school district.
*Students have the opportunity to participate in diverse
after school clubs such as Odyssey of the Mind, FIRST
Lego League, Math Club, Chess Club, and many more. Our
Odyssey of the Mind teams placed #1 in the World Finals
in 2007 and 2008.
*Poinciana offers SECME (aka Mad Panda Society), an
engineering club, to students in grades 3-5. The students
can continue with SECME through their academic careers
where they have the opportunity to earn scholarships.
The students design and build mousetrap-cars, bridges,
and water rockets, and then compete in district and
state competitions. The main focus of SECME is engineering,
but they also offer essay, poetry and brain bowl competitions.
*Students from all grade levels participate in the
creation of a Black History Museum in honor of Black
History Month in February.
*We offer many special guest lecture programs.
*Poinciana has been recognized as a School of Distinction
by the Magnet Schools of America.
