MATH SCIENCE ROBOTICS ACADEMY
Students in the Math Science & Robotics Academy follow an intensive three-year high school preparatory program which emphasizes science, mathematics, and engineering skills and will prepare them to be highly competitive in the Engineering field. The program is designed to encourage and prepare students for entry into a high school robotics programs or related fields of study.
The purpose of the program is to provide all students with a motivating, skill-based curriculum which teaches a foundation which can be applied to job specific skills, facilitate student awareness of robotics and their various uses in the work force, and start the preparation and training for endless opportunities in the future. Students will have opportunity to learn about high paying careers and exposure to various occupations to truly fulfill there dreams.
The introduction of the Math Science & Robotics Academy Program at the middle school level will help students in the decision making process of heading into the field of Engineering, specifically robotics. This exposure will also help in determining whether to commit to such a rewarding field or to change to another field of interest early enough to obtain all the benefits of their program of choice at the high school level.
The Math Science & Robotics Academy is designed to encourage and prepare students for a wide range of professions by emphasizing skills in decision making, problem solving, verbal and written communication, and computer literacy.
The goals of the program are to develop a professional pre-engineering student who has early focus, leadership abilities, and a mature attitude toward his or her academic studies and future career goals and establish an ongoing partnership with local businesses, and public and private schools
CURRICULUM
Level: Regular
Grade: 6
Credit:1
Prerequisite:: Interest in the Robotics or the Engineering field.
Description: Students will be introduced to the foundations of Robotics through engineering. This class will provide students with the basic understanding of engineering. Following the scientific method students will understand some of the more basic reasons of ’why’ when dealing with constructions and modeling. At first with prescribed constructions and then on into personal and/or theoretical constructions. Team building strategies will also be implemented to foster a productive and efficient working environment.
Level: Regular
Grade: 7
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Robotics I (or Robotics instructor’s approval), & 3.0 Grade Point Average.
Description: This full year course exposes students to a wide variety of adaptations a robot could have. Through the various sensors and attachments students will not only construct them and test them, but understand exactly how it is these items work. Through real world applications students will delve deeper into the science of engineering and begin to apply algebraic thinking to understand and predict the behaviors of a robot. Then with the use of the computer lab students will begin to program and understand the inner work-ings of the robot with a ‘visual’, Lego based software. Finally to culminate in a Year 2 wide mock competition.
Level: Regular
Grade: 8
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Completion of Year 2 Robotics Lab; 3.0 Grade Point Average; positive recommendation from Math, Science, and Language Arts teachers; & Robotics instructor’s approval.
Description: This year of lab is broken into 2 portions. The first half of the year is designed with taking the teams to state competition. The first semester will be utilized in establishing working teams, receiving the years competition specs and preparing themselves for said competition. The second year is a basic electronics course touching on electrical engineering and its importance towards the world of robotics. Students will be designing and creating items from simple circuits to small robots. There will also be an introduction to some high school based computer languages to help expose/prepare them for the years ahead.
