MEDICAL SCIENCE ACADEMY

Students in the Medical Sciences Academy follow an intensive three-year high school preparatory program which emphasizes science, mathematics, and language skills and will prepare them to be highly competitive in the medical field. The program is designed to encourage and prepare students for entry into high school medical programs or related fields of study.
The purpose of the program is to provide all students with a motivating, skill-based curriculum which teaches job specific medical skills, facilitate student awareness of medical and allied health professions, and start the preparation and training for endless opportunities in the future. Students will have opportunity to learn about high paying careers and exposure to various occupations to truly fulfill there dreams.
Students introduction of the Medical Sciences in the middle school level will help them in the decision making process of becoming a health professional.

The other principles are designed to encourage and prepare students for a wide range of professions by emphasizing skills in decision making, problem solving, verbal, and written communication.
The goals of the program are to develop a professional pre-medical student who has early focus, leadership abilities, and a mature attitude toward his or her academic studies and future career goals; create community awareness and responsibility for citizenship; and establish an ongoing partnership with local businesses, hospitals, clinics, private medical practices, and public and private schools.

ORIENTATION TO HEALTH OCCUPATIONS

Description: This full year course introduces the students to health occupations and career options available in health care. It will provide the students with the knowledge, experience, science and technical skills necessary to enter careers and/or educational programs which are on the frontier of medicine. The students will learn basic medical concepts relating to experimental research, anatomy and physiology, terminology, nutrition, and sports medicine. Introduction to laboratory sciences, as well as field trips and guest speakers are essential parts of this course. Students will be required to compile a portfolio of their work.

EXPLORATION OF HEALTH OCCUPATIONS

Prerequisite: Completion of Grade 6 “Orientation to Health Occupations”, Interest in the medical sciences and/or health care field, medical instructor’s approval, and 3.0 Grade Point Average.

Description: This full year course exposes students to a wide variety of traditional medical careers and advanced concepts in Anatomy and Physiology, Red Cross Certification and Medical Terminology. It also
employs problem solving and critical thinking skills in hands-on laboratory activities. This includes dissections and advanced problem solving projects. Students will use the research capacities of the Internet to gain exposure to state-of-the-art medical topics. Students will also participate in field trips and interact with guest speakers associated with various medical careers. Students will be required to create a scientific booklet and compile a portfolio of their work. In addition, Academy students are encouraged to follow the recommended curriculum track for continuation of the Medecal Academies in High School.

MEDICAL SKILLS AND SERVICES

Prerequisite: Completion of Exploration of Health Occupations, 3.0 Grade Point Average, positive recommendation from math, science and language teachers, & medical instructor’s approval.

Description: This full year course exposes the students to advanced scientific and laboratory techniques related to a career in the medical and allied health field. Skills representative of medical careers will be explored through hands-on activities, advanced laboratory investigations including dissections, the use of scientific techniques, medical equipment and computer software. These skills include reading vital signs, emergency first aid, using aseptic equipment, cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, problem-solving and decision making. Students will be introduced to concepts of medical science related to experimental research, basic biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, clinical microbiology and psychology. Students will participate in field trips to observe medical facilities and procedures, to observe demonstrations of the most recent advances in the fields of medical and computer technology, and to in terview guest speakers associated with various medical careers. Students will be required to create a medical internship handbook and compile a portfolio of their work, as well as, completing a supervised clinical internship (shadowing experience) in an approved medical facility.
